Kolbeinn was a hugely promising player as a youngster and did very well with his first club, Víkingur Reykjavík. As a teenager, he decided to change clubs and switch to HK. There was only one reason for that, he wanted to train with Zeljko Sankovic, youth coach at HK.
"Zeljko Sankovic gets me to switch. I felt like I was not making any progress in Víkingur. I needed a new challenge and that was also the reason why I made the switch. I did not feel much like the people in Víkingur were upset about my decision, but I think that was the case."
"I think back then this was the right step, because I just felt like there was nothing more to do at Víkingur. I knew Zeljko and I had been doing special excercises with him. He encouraged me to switch."
"He helped me to get into unbelievable shape. He completely changed me. He worked on my endurance, the explosive power, the technique and just everything you need in order to be in a top shape as a footballer. He just took care of it all. I was training with him twice per day, five to six days every week."
"At that time I was in high school (Menntaskólinn in Kópavogur) and already in the first team of HK as well. I decided to quit school and focus completely on football."
"After all these practices, I played in the U17 European Championship in March or April 2007 and scored five goals against Russia. Foreign clubs started to notice and contact me. I have so much Zeljko to thank for."
